Maine offers some of the most naturally beautiful backdrops for wedding photos, with landscapes you can’t find anywhere else.

Maine has a way of feeling both understated and breathtaking at the same time, which is exactly what makes it such a good fit for wedding photos. You have the coastline, the small towns, the forests, and even the mountains all within reach, so it’s easy to find a setting that fits your vision with a gorgeous backdrop. Whether you want something coastal and open or more tucked away and private, Maine gives you plenty of options.

There’s no shortage of beauty here in Maine and that means you have a variety of locations to choose from for wedding photos. These are just a few of my favorites around my home state!
York feels dramatic, and equally romantic. The coastline here is rough and expansive, with cliffs that drop into the Atlantic and wide-open ocean views that are effortlessly beautiful. It’s one of those places where the setting immediately sets the tone, and the New England shoreline truly feels timeless. York is an even better option if you want the coastal Maine experience without venturing too far north; it’s easily accessible from Boston, but once you’re there, it feels completely removed from everything. Cliff House is one of my absolute favorite venues here that gives you some of the best views that York has to offer!
Kennebunkport has to be one of my most favorite spots here in Maine. The harbor is lined with sailboats, there are quiet streets filled with historic buildings, and hydrangeas seem to bloom everywhere in the summer. It’s coastal Maine without feeling too rugged or remote. Your guests can walk to coffee shops in the morning, explore Dock Square between events, and still end the night with a waterfront reception. If you’re drawn to that classic New England aesthetic, Kennebunkport fits that perfectly.
Portland has both the coastal charm and a fun city vibe. You still have the wonderful waterfront views, there’s cobblestone streets in Old Port, and you’ll find some of the best food in New England all in walking distance! It’s an easy spot to travel to here in Maine, with the airport and a wide range of hotels here, but it also has that very distinctive Maine feel.
Bar Harbor sits right next to Acadia National Park, so you get dramatic cliffs, mountain views, and ocean scenery all in one place. Weddings here feel incredibly scenic, which is perfect for couples who want that “Maine postcard” backdrop. This is an especially fun spot if you’re looking for more of an elopement vibe! Check out this Acadia elopement for inspiration!
Cape Elizabeth is just outside Portland but feels more secluded and dramatic. It’s home to Portland Head Light, one of the most photographed lighthouses in the country. While large weddings aren’t typically hosted directly at the lighthouse, the surrounding coastline makes for stunning portraits. It’s ideal for couples who want stunning ocean views and a classic lighthouse in the backdrop. However, if you do plan to have a small wedding, this could be your perfect Maine location!

Something that you have to love about Maine is that you will absolutely see all four seasons here. This means each time of year can look very different for a wedding! Here’s what you can expect at each time of year.
Spring is quieter and softer. Early spring can still feel like “mud season” in more rural areas, but late May starts to feel fresh and green. It’s often a more affordable time to host a destination wedding.
Summer is peak season in Maine. The weather is typically beautiful, especially along the coast, and everything is open and lively. The only downfall is that there is higher venue pricing and heavier tourist traffic. If summer is what you prefer, just be sure to plan well in advance.
Fall in Maine is hard to beat. The foliage alone can completely transform your wedding backdrop. Temperatures are cooler and more comfortable, and crowds begin to taper off slightly after early October.
Winter weddings in Maine feel intimate and cozy. Think candlelight receptions, historic inns, and snow-covered landscapes. While travel can be less predictable, you’ll often find more date availability and sometimes lower venue rates.
