From charming coastal towns to rocky beaches, here’s everything you need to know about planning a New England coastal engagement session.
There’s something about the New England coast that makes it such a beautiful place for engagement photos. Between the charming seaside towns, historic buildings, rocky shorelines, and little harbors filled with boats, there’s no shortage of places to explore together.
One of the best things about planning an engagement session in New England is how much variety you can find in one location. You can start your session walking through a downtown area, stopping in front of colorful storefronts and historic buildings, and then head toward the water for a completely different backdrop.
Whether you live in New England or you’re visiting for a weekend getaway, a coastal engagement session is a great excuse to spend some time exploring somewhere beautiful while getting photos that feel like you.

New England has so many beautiful coastal towns, each with something a little different to offer. Some are known for their beaches and rocky shorelines, while others have walkable downtown areas, historic architecture, and picturesque harbors.
Here are a few locations worth considering for your engagement photos!
Kennebunkport is one of those towns that feels like it belongs on a postcard. Downtown is filled with charming shops, historic buildings, and little streets that are perfect for wandering around together. Dock Square is an especially fun place for engagement photos if you love the look of a classic New England coastal town.
You also have beautiful nearby beaches and waterfront areas, so it’s easy to get a mix of downtown and coastal photos during your session.
If you’re looking for a combination of city and coastal scenery, Portland is a great option. The Old Port has cobblestone streets, brick buildings, and plenty of little corners that make beautiful backdrops for photos. You can also head outside of downtown to places like Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth or one of the nearby beaches for a completely different setting.
Newport is a beautiful option for couples who love historic architecture and ocean views. Between the famous Cliff Walk, grand mansions, and coastal scenery, there are plenty of places to choose from. It’s especially great if you’re hoping for engagement photos that feel a little more classic and elegant while still incorporating the coast.
Rockport is a smaller coastal town with colorful buildings, fishing boats, and a beautiful harbor. Bearskin Neck is a popular area to explore, with little shops and waterfront views throughout. If you love the look of a traditional New England fishing village, Rockport is definitely worth considering.
Portsmouth is another great option if you love historic downtown areas. You’ll find brick sidewalks, beautiful old buildings, waterfront views, and plenty of charming streets to explore. Prescott Park is also a beautiful spot near the water, especially during the warmer months when the gardens are in bloom.

One of the best things about New England is how different the scenery looks throughout the year. While summer might be the first season that comes to mind for coastal photos, each season has something to offer.
Spring: Spring is a great time for engagement photos if you prefer cooler temperatures and fewer tourists. The coastal towns start coming back to life after winter, and you’ll begin seeing flowers and greenery as the season progresses. Just keep in mind that early spring can still be pretty chilly, especially near the water.
Summer: Summer is perfect for that classic New England coastal look. Think sailboats in the harbor, colorful flowers outside shops, sunny beaches, and long evenings. Coastal towns can get busy during the summer months, so planning your session early in the morning or closer to sunset can help avoid some of the crowds.
Fall: Fall is another beautiful time for engagement photos in New England. The temperatures are usually more comfortable, the summer crowds begin to thin out, and you can find beautiful fall colors throughout the region. Early fall is especially nice if you still want some of that summer coastal feel without the peak-season crowds.
Winter: Winter engagement sessions aren’t for everyone, but they can be beautiful! Coastal towns are much quieter, and the bare trees, historic buildings, and occasional snow create a completely different look. You’ll definitely want to dress warmly and be prepared for cold temperatures and wind.
For the best lighting, I typically recommend planning your session around sunrise or during the hour or two before sunset. The softer light is especially beautiful along the water!

When choosing outfits for your coastal engagement session, I always recommend starting with something that feels comfortable and true to your personal style. You don’t need to dress a certain way just because you’re taking photos along the coast!
That said, there are a few things worth keeping in mind when putting your outfits together.
If you’re planning to wear two outfits, I’d recommend choosing one that’s a little more dressed up and another that’s more casual. This gives you some variety in your final gallery without needing to make a bunch of outfit changes.
Most importantly, choose outfits that you feel good wearing!
