Maine is one of the most beautiful places to host a destination wedding. Here’s what you should know about locations, seasons, travel, and budgeting.
Planning a Maine destination wedding is a little different than planning one in your hometown, but that’s exactly what makes it special. As a photographer, I’ve seen firsthand how much the setting shapes the entire experience here, from the beautiful coastal lighting to quiet harbor towns that turn your wedding into a full weekend getaway. Maine has everything that you’d need visually, but the logistics take intention. In this guide, I’m covering everything you’ll want to think through before planning your gorgeous destination wedding here in Maine!

There’s something about Maine that feels elevated, but in an effortless way. It has a quiet coastal charm with the beautiful rocky cliffs, historic inns, sailboats in the harbor, pine forests, and long stretches of shoreline, but doesn’t feel like a tourist-heavy destination. This makes it feel relaxed and refined, which is ideal for a wedding.
Maine gives you variety without needing to hop on multiple flights. You can host a waterfront ceremony overlooking the Atlantic, plan a tented wedding on a private estate, or choose a cozy barn tucked into the countryside. The backdrop feels inherently romantic and organic, so you don’t have to over-style it.
Another reason couples love Maine is that it truly has four distinct seasons. Summer brings that classic New England coastal energy. Fall means foliage that feels almost unreal. Winter can feel intimate and editorial. Spring feels fresh and means vibrant blooms. No matter your vision, there’s a season in Maine that fits it!

There’s no shortage of beauty here in Maine and that means you have a variety of locations to choose from for a wedding. These are just a few of my favorites around my home state!
York feels dramatic, and equally romantic. The coastline here is rugged and expansive, with cliffs that drop into the Atlantic and wide-open ocean views that don’t need much added to them. It’s one of those places where the setting immediately sets the tone, and the New England shoreline truly feels timeless. York is especially appealing if you want the coastal Maine experience without venturing too far north; it’s easily accessible from Boston, but once you’re there, it feels completely removed from everything. Cliff House is one of my absolute favorite venues here that gives you some of the best views that York has to offer!
Portland has both the coastal charm and a fun city vibe. You still have the wonderful waterfront views, there’s cobblestone streets in Old Port, and you’ll find some of the best food in New England all in walking distance! It’s an easy spot to travel to here in Maine, with the airport and a wide range of hotels here, but it also has that very distinctive Maine feel.
Bar Harbor sits right next to Acadia National Park, so you get dramatic cliffs, mountain views, and ocean scenery all in one place. Weddings here feel incredibly scenic, which is perfect for couples who want that “Maine postcard” backdrop. This is an especially fun spot if you’re looking for more of an elopement vibe!
Kennebunkport has to be one of my most favorite spots here in Maine. The harbor is lined with sailboats, historic inns are tucked along quiet streets, and hydrangeas seem to bloom everywhere in the summer. It’s coastal Maine without feeling too rugged or remote. Your guests can walk to coffee shops in the morning, explore Dock Square between events, and still end the night with a waterfront reception. If you’re drawn to that classic New England aesthetic, Kennebunkport fits that perfectly.
Cape Elizabeth is just outside Portland but feels more secluded and dramatic. It’s home to Portland Head Light, one of the most photographed lighthouses in the country. While large weddings aren’t typically hosted directly at the lighthouse, the surrounding coastline makes for stunning portraits. It’s ideal for couples who want stunning ocean views and a classic lighthouse in the backdrop.

Something that you have to love about Maine is that you will absolutely see all four seasons here. This means each time of year can look very different for a wedding! Here’s what you can expect at each time of year.
Summer is peak season in Maine. The weather is typically beautiful, especially along the coast, and everything is open and lively. The only downfall is there is higher venue pricing and heavier tourist traffic. If summer is what you prefer, just be sure to plan well in advance.
Fall in Maine is hard to beat. The foliage alone can completely transform your wedding backdrop. Temperatures are cooler and more comfortable, and crowds begin to taper off slightly after early October.
Winter weddings in Maine feel intimate and cozy. Think candlelight receptions, historic inns, and snow-covered landscapes. While travel can be less predictable, you’ll often find more date availability and sometimes lower venue rates.
Spring is quieter and softer. Early spring can still feel like “mud season” in more rural areas, but late May starts to feel fresh and green. It’s often a more affordable time to host a destination wedding.

Destination weddings come with some unique financial considerations that you want to keep in mind!
Compared to some international destinations, Maine can feel more accessible, but it’s still important to budget carefully.

Logistics matter for a destination wedding! Most out-of-state guests will fly into Portland International Jetport or Boston Logan and then drive north. Rental cars are often essential, especially if your venue is outside a major town.
Here are a few things that will be helpful for both you and your guests:
Because Maine is spread out, proximity between venue, hotels, and welcome events should be part of your planning conversation from the beginning.
From a legal standpoint, getting married in Maine is relatively straightforward. Here’s what you need to know!
It’s always wise to confirm details directly with the local clerk’s office where you’ll apply, as minor processes can vary.

There’s real value in working with a local team. Maine-based planners understand coastal weather, tide schedules, and how quickly wind can change a ceremony setup. They often have established relationships with rental companies and caterers who know how to work in remote or tented environments.
Local photographers and planners also understand light along the coast, when fog tends to roll in, how sunsets shift throughout the year, and where to pivot if weather changes. They also know the best locations around the state for portraits better than a destination photographer. Flying in vendors can absolutely work, but you’ll want to factor in travel fees and additional lodging into your overall budget.
