Higgins Beach is the perfect romantic destination in Scarborough, Maine to plan a surprise proposal with a breathtaking backdrop!
Higgins Beach Proposal
Higgins Beach in Scarborough, Maine is a favorite spot for a reason—it has that perfect mix of laid-back vibes and stunning views. The beach itself is small and peaceful, with soft sand, gentle waves, and epic sunsets that make for a super romantic backdrop. Plus, the cute old beach cottages nearby give it this cozy, nostalgic feel that’s hard to beat.
If you’re thinking about a destination proposal, this place is definitely a win. You can stroll along the shore, check out tide pools, or even sneak in a little surf session. It’s close enough to Portland for a fun post-proposal dinner, but still feels like a private getaway. Basically, it’s the kind of spot that makes popping the question feel even more magical!
Tips for Planning a Surprise Proposal
Here’s a casual bullet point list to help you plan a smooth and memorable surprise proposal:
Pick the right spot – Somewhere meaningful or just plain beautiful like Higgins Beach! You want a stunning backdrop for your proposal photos!
Know their vibe – Are they into private moments or would they love a big gesture with friends and family around?
Have a cover story – Say you’re going out for a nice dinner or doing a fun photoshoot to keep the surprise alive.
Scout the area ahead of time – Make sure the lighting, background, and timing (sunset, golden hour, etc.) are all on point.
Bring a photographer! – A suprise proposal is a big deal with real emotions and having that captured on camera is so special. Plan ahead and book a photographer so you can have photos to treasure forever!
Have a backup plan – Weather, crowds, or random stuff can happen, so stay flexible. I’ll always have other options for locations if your first choice doesn’t work out!
Celebrate after – Whether it’s a fancy dinner or a cozy hangout, plan something fun to soak it all in.
Keep the ring safe (and hidden!) – No one wants a “lost ring” story!
