Plan the most breathtaking proposal along the Maine coastline with this guide on choosing a location, time of year, and more.
When you think of a backdrop for getting down on one knee in pictures you’ll treasure forever, does it include the stunning views of the Maine coast? Because the scenery here is truly unmatched and makes for some pretty incredible photos. There’s many different spots along the coast that make an ideal location for a proposal and engagement photos as well! Here are just a few of my favorite spots here in Maine!
Part of what I love so much about Maine is there really is not a shortage of natural beauty here, and that means a wide variety of locations for proposals, engagement photos, elopements and more. But for that perfect moment of saying yes to your partner forever, here are the most stunning options!
Kettle Cove, seen in this session, is a small beautiful cove that has the breathtaking ocean scenery, the beach to explore on, the rocky cliffsides, and boardwalks through wildflowers and tall trees. The sun sets right into the ocean which makes for the most incredible golden hour. You can also follow a trailhead further to find another hidden cove, that’s actually one of my most favorite hidden gems!
Biddeford Pool is one of the most beautiful seaside towns that wraps around Biddeford and meets in a vast marsh, aka the pool, as us locals call it! There’s many different areas here with a wide variety of scenery, including rocks out in the water, sandy beaches or boardwalks. This means that having a photographer that knows the area is highly recommended! No matter what, your proposal here would result in the most stunning photos!
2 Lights State Park is a stunning park that encompasses 41 acres of rocky headlands, with incredible views of the Atlantic and Casco Bay. You can walk along the path to enjoy the refreshing sea breezes and see all the boats coming into the Harbor. But don’t let the name of the park decieve you, there are no lighthouses here, but I promise the views of the coastline make up for it!

If you’re looking for beautiful coastal views, rocky beaches, and dramatic cliffs for your proposal, then Prout’s Neck is perfect! It’s such a hidden gem that is limited to residents at Prout’s Neck in Scarborough, but there is a way to access this beautiful spot. Grab a quick bite to eat or drink at Black Point Inn and access the trail through the parking lot (there isn’t a way around this!). What I love most about this spot is it typically very secluded, so you won’t have to worry about an audience!
Fort Williams is a popular seaside location in Maine, because it is actually home to the most photographed lighthouse in America, Portland Headlight! And when you see how breath-taking this lighthouse is, you’ll definitely understand why! There’s so much to offer here, with the rocky coast, old brick and rock forts, a stunning garden, and you can’t forget the classic Maine lighthouse views. It’s perfect for anyone wanting a quintessential Maine proposal!
This is a popular spot for both tourists and locals, with a beautiful ocean-side walk including over 39 benches so you can sit and enjoy the view. The path takes you along the water and rocky coast, with beach roses that hug the sides. You’ll find a mini replica lighthouse overlooking Ogunquit Beach here, the quaint Perkins Cove at end of the path, and an adorable footbridge crossing over the harbor with plenty of sailboats to enjoy. It’s a super fun place to explore after capturing your proposal!
I’m saving one of my favorites for last, the adorable seaside town of Kennebunkport! This is a very quintessential “coastal Maine” location with all of its colorful cottages, shops, and of course ocean views. It also has beautiful hydrangea bushes hugging the cobblestone streets and cedar siding buildings that have been worn by the sea salt in the air. And like most seaside towns, you can’t forget about all the sailboats! Take photos along the town, on the bridge, and then take a short drive to the nearby pier for more waterfront shots.

Here’s a breakdown of what each season in Maine brings for engagement photos—each has its own vibe, so it really depends on what you’re going for!
Spring – Late April to early June is a sweet spot. Everything’s starting to bloom, the trees are getting their fresh green leaves, and there’s a soft, romantic feel to the light. You’ll probably catch some lilacs or wildflowers, especially in gardens or open fields. Just be ready for some mud if you’re heading to the mountains!
Summer – From June to August, you get long days, golden sunsets, and everything is lush and alive. It’s perfect for beach sessions, or mountaintop views. Just plan around the heat and maybe some bugs—early morning or golden hour shoots are best for that dreamy lighting and cooler temps.
Fall – September through mid-October is absolute magic. Maine’s foliage is next-level—fiery reds, oranges, and golds everywhere. It’s a super popular time, so some spots can get a little busy, but if you time it right (weekdays or early in the day), you can get those iconic, cozy autumn shots without a crowd.
Winter – If you want a cozy, romantic vibe, late December through February can be stunning. Think snow-covered trees, warm sweaters and boots, and snuggling up with your person. Some places look like a snow globe, and the soft winter light is actually really flattering. Just prepare and bundle up!
Each season has its own charm, so you really can’t go wrong—it just depends on your style and what kind of backdrop you’re dreaming of!
