When you think of Maine engagement photos, some stunning coastal images probably come to mind! Maine is known for it’s picturesque views all along the coast. So why not capture these in your engagement photos!

Maine Engagement Photos on the Coast: 9 Locations

There are quite a few great coastal locations for photos here in Maine but here are my favorites!

Prout’s Neck, Scarborough 

If you’re looking for beautiful coastal views, dramatic cliffs, and rocky beaches for your engagement photos, then this location is perfect! It’s such a hidden gem that is limited to residents at Prout’s Neck in Scarborough, but there is a way to access this beautiful spot.

If you’re wanting to take photos here, you will need to first eat or get a drink at the Black Point Inn. You are able to access the start to this trail through the parking lot, but there are parking attendants checking! So keep this in mind, and just plan to enjoy a drink or some yummy food before your session.

The great thing about this location, especially if you’re a bit nervous to have an audience during your session, is that it’s incredibly secluded. Since it’s a bit tricky to access, we often times will be the only ones!

Biddeford Pool

Biddeford Pool is one of the most beautiful seaside towns that wraps around Biddeford and meets in a vast marsh, aka the pool, as us locals call it! There are many different areas one can visit for a variety of scenery for your engagement session! Having a local photographer for this area is especially recommended because of this!

The many different backdrops you can get in this town are wooded trails carved along the rocks that come out to the ocean, sandy beaches, or board walks through the dune grass and beach roses. You can’t go wrong with wherever you choose!

Fort Williams, Cape Elizabeth

Fort Williams is a popular seaside location in Maine, because it is actually home to the most photographed lighthouse in America, Portland Headlight! And when you see how breath-taking this lighthouse is, you’ll definitely understand why!

This park has SO much to offer and can add a lot to your experience with engagement photos here. You of course have the classic Maine lighthouse views, the rocky coast, old brick and rock forts, a stunning garden and even a lobster roll truck. It’s definitely a perfect spot for anyone wanting the quintessential Maine experience!

Just keep in mind that they close the gates to the park at sunset, so keep track of the time and plan accordingly! 

2 Lights State Park , Cape Elizabeth

2 Lights State Park is a stunning park that encompasses 41 acres of rocky headlands. Because it’s high up on the rocky coast, you have incredible views of the Atlantic and Casco Bay. You can walk along the path to enjoy the refreshing sea breezes and see all the boats coming into the Harbor.

The name of this park is deceiving though, as there aren’t any lighthouses here but the views of the coast make up for it! Since this is a state park, there is a gate attendant that will collect a small fee to enter. And the same as above, they are strict on everyone being out by sunset.

These views are definitely breath-taking!

Kettle Cove, Cape Elizabeth

Kettle Cove is a small beautiful cove that has the spectacular ocean scenery, the rocky cliffsides, the beach to explore on, and boardwalks through wildflowers and tall trees. The sun sets right into the ocean which makes for the most incredible golden hour!

At the far end of the parking lot there are two trail heads that can take you towards more trails and gives you an opportunity to view yet another hidden cove. It’s one of my favorite hidden gems and I love how much you can explore here!

Fort Foster, Kittery

If you’re looking for engagement photos that give you a very classic beach feel, then Fort Foster is a perfect option! It’s a spot with mostly beach, but it really is a beautiful spot!

There’s rocks sprinkled about over the sandy shore that can make a great backdrop and even prop for photos! You’ll also see a tall boardwalk that’s beautiful to shoot either under or on it too. The sun sets into the ocean so I highly recommend golden hour photos in this location!

Marginal Way & Perkins Cove, Ogunquit

This is a popular spot for both tourists and locals and it’s easy to see why! It’s a beautiful ocean-side walk with over 39 benches so you can sit and enjoy the view. The path takes you along the water and rocky coast, with beach roses that hug the sides.

As you walk the path, you’ll pass a mini replica lighthouse overlooking Ogunquit Beach and likely catch some surfers in the distance! Towards one end of the path, you’ll find yourself in quaint Perkins Cove, with seaside cottage-type gift shops, bathrooms, and restaurants. 

Once you’re down there, you can’t miss the adorable footbridge that crosses over the harbor with sailboats covering the cove. It’s such a fun spot to capture seaside Maine!

Kennebunkport

One of my absolute favorite seaside towns is Kennebunkport! This is a very quintessential “coastal Maine” location with all of its colorful cottages, shops, and of course ocean views. It also has beautiful hydrangea bushes hugging the cobblestone streets and cedar siding buildings that have been worn by the sea salt in the air. And like most seaside towns, you can’t forget about all the sailboats!

When walking through the downtown area, you’ll find a small bridge overlooking the local dingy boats and sails, locally made art and chocolates. Then, from there it’s a quick drive to a nearby pier to really embrace the Maine experience. This includes the smell of fish from our local fisherman coming in from a day of work!

It’s a perfect place to get classic Maine engagement photos and enjoy exploring the town, crossing bridges, climbing rocks and smelling flowers!

Acadia National Park

Of course, Acadia National Park is a favorite for elopements and it’s also a perfect spot for engagement photos (or proposal photos!) as well! It truly is a grand place and there’s a reason why it’s so popular! It is a stunning combination of mountains, trails, grand coastlines, tall rocky cliffs, moss that lines the paths, and views that really can’t be beat.

Acadia National Park is also surrounded by Bar Harbor, a quaint little seaside town with lots to do and see! So engagement photos here can truly be a full adventure!

What to Wear for Coastal Engagement Photos

When you’ve chosen coastal backdrops for your engagement photos, the best colors to work with are pastels and neutrals! Really try to avoid any clashing patterns, coastal or not!

Another thing I recommend is to avoid being too “matchy.” You want your colors to coordinate but not match. If they’re too similar, you’ll blend in together and not stand out as much as you should!

Ladies, if you’re wanting that flowy dress in the ocean breeze moment, so do I!!! Wearing an outfit that flows makes for just a little extra magic!  The movement it creates in the photos is absolutely stunning.

Of course you want to wear what you feel comfortable in and what fits your style, but these are just a few of my recommendations!
